Why I Dress Up For The School Run

First, I must make clear that this blog is not suggesting that if you don't dress up for the school run, that you're doing something wrong. I mean, let's be honest, as the busy super-mum jugglers that we are, it's not every day that we have time to glam up for the school run! There is many a morning when I jump in the car with my twins, PJs, slippers and shades on and not a stitch of makeup in sight. And you know what, that is fine.

However, for the most part, I try my best to make sure that I appropriately glam up for the school-run wherever possible, and here's why. As women, we often adhere to a list of unwritten rules so we feel socially accepted or are seen as 'decent'. For example, we may sometimes be expected to completely forget that we exist in our own right, once we enter motherhood. As a result, we have all sorts of conditions placed upon us, projecting society's idea of what a 'good mother’ is onto us. And sadly, for some those conditions include putting ourselves last and only dipping into that makeup bag on special occasions!

Admittedly, it is not always just a result of the social pressures that we face from others, that cause us to sometimes forget about ourselves. We often put constraints on ourselves too. Usually, out of fear! Fear that others may reject us, fear that we don't deserve to spend time on ourselves. And sadly all too often, an overwhelming lack of confidence resides within us. This lack of confidence regularly prevents us from doing nice things for ourselves. Such as buying that new lipstick we saw on the Rimmel London ad, or spending that extra £30 on a beauty treatment for ourselves.

Who remembers the days when we were encouraged to save our outfits for best? Well, those days are long gone. It is OK to spend a bit of time each day, applying some lippy, putting together a cute outfit and making yourself look and feel good. I am not suggesting that as busy women, we will have the time to glam up every day. But you can see where I am going with this. And with that in mind, I encourage, urge and even challenge you to look your very best, at least once this week. Whether your off to do the weekly shop, doing the school run or simply chilling at home, looking and feeling fabulous are linked and are infectious. Who knows, hopefully, those women that might give you side-eye at the school gates will jump aboard the fabulous train too!
